The Walking Dead VR Game Demoed At E3
A company called Starbreeze is developing a virtual reality headset, as a lot of people are doing these days. Called StarVR, the headset is currently being demoed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles — and the game is based on The Walking Dead.
It’s called Overkill’s The Walking Dead: VR Experience. This is a separate project from Overkill’s The Walking Dead, which is expected to play much like the game Payday. This one is more like a carnival ride, at least for the time being. The demo is an on-rails shooter where you’re sitting in a wheelchair, two people are pushing you, and then the Walkers show up. Halfway through the demo, you’re given a shotgun and you and start busting heads.
The shotgun is a physical item you also hold in the real world, and it’s unknown at this time if the game will come with one or if they’ll expect you to find a paper towel tube in your house and improvise. But people have walked away saying the demo is effective at putting you in a scary zombie world, if a little disorienting as VR tends to be.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead will be using none of the popular characters from the comics or TV series, and the VR Experience does not either. Between then and now, the game is expected to grow in depth and goals, but for now, it’s just a ride.
