    I keep seeing comments about how people can't seem to understand why Eugene's plan was to "simply shoot their way out".

    That's because that wasn't the plan. It was stated that they didn't have the ammo necessary to clear the walkers. What they did, is designate two small zones, on each side of a particular exit, and only shot walkers in those two small zones. If you notice, when they are shooting them, they pause and wait until new walkers walk into those two zones, THEN shoot them. In this way, the bodies pile up, creating a natural barrier on each side of the exit, so they can escape.

    That was also reiterated by Morgan who said "they are making a path!" because he noticed the walkers piling up. The others, like the person who was talking over the walkie-talkie were under the impression they were trying to clear them all out which is why they were caught off-guard when the saviors came out when they did.
