    After Eugene tells Negan what to with the walkers at the fence Laura (is that her name) starts to take him away. He walks towards the camera and just before he goes offscreen he gives a little smirk. Wondering if that's a clue to mean Eugene knows he can tell these guys anything and they'll believe him and he can do/get what he wants.

    It sure is.
    The way he rattles off his supposed skills is overwhelming and seemingly impressive at the same time. The more he gets into detail, talking like a computer, the more others are convinced that he knows what he is talking about.
    So he knows that he will be able to bemuse and outsmart most of them which gives him a chance to survive and probably to work against them.

    I thought Eugene the brainbox was a phoney, that he was't super intelligent. He was just good at faking it.

    He is clearly good at faking it and fooling people even if only for a time.
    Abe and Rosita would never have figured it out on their own and it seems like a pretty handy survival skill for Eugene for sure.

    I think Eugene is very book smart and retains most of what he reads. He admitted to not having a photographic memory, but has learned a lot by being a bookworm introvert.

    I think he realized how easy negan is to fool...and that it might work to his advantage. Negan just eats up the big words Eugene throws out there and believes everything he says.
