I didn't quite understand what Dr Carson said was wrong with Gabe. Infection? From what?

I guess I just assumed it was from being covered in walker guts with very little protection between him & the guts...Negan said something like "have any of your people gotten sick from it?" alluding to the fact that it was possible to get sick. That's what i took away from it anyway!

I thought I heard him say something about it being from the guts, but that just doesn't make sense to me unless he had a cut or something. Plus, wouldn't he die?

Yes, Carson mentioned about it being from the guts.

He might have had an open wound somewhere that he wasn't aware of.

Infections are funny things. Sometimes you can do something 100 times and be fine, then one time you get an infection.

To be honest, I think its actually more realistic than the way FTWD does it. Working with rotting guts, you would be expected to get an infection sometimes. Not every time, it would depend on things like if you had a sore somewhere, or you wiped your mouth with your hand, or reach down onto your peter for a good scratch :p. I actually feel like it would make less sense if no one ever got sick from it.

Since he was exposed to walkers , I think it could be walking pneumonia.

When we've seen the characters use the guts in the past, they've always put something on over their skin but Gabe & Negan didn't have that available. I wish Negan had been the one to get sick. DRATS.

If he gets sick from walker guts and then recovers, does he have immunity? And then Dr. Carson uses his blood to inoculate everyone else? I know this kind of question drives people crazy, but I can't help wondering.

People have been cut up all the time in the apocalypse and still haven't gotten sick from walker contact unless they were bitten, so I find this walker guts premise silly. It makes total sense from a medical perspective, but not from a WD perspective.

The CDC should have experimented with what it takes to be doomed. I don't know how they would have gotten volunteers, of course, but people will surprise you.

Yeah but what doesn't make sense to me is how he's surviving. I can accept that it's probably from a wound he didn't know he had.

Well, I guess its only been about one day or so in their time since he was found to be sick. Maybe ole Carson will find some abx.

No, the idea is that Gabe would have an infection from regular ubiquitous bacteria that is normally associated with dead tissue, whereas a walker bite is something special, specific to the walkers. A walker bite not only is 100% lethal [without immediate amputation], it also kills within 24 hours. Much faster than a normal infection would kill, from introduction to death.
