    Well, of course Rick killed the piggies to protect the fence, but they were infected anway so he had to kill them at some point.

    They are growing the food they eat in zombie infested soil. That might have something to do with it.

    It could be the rats, too. Rats are filthy. I thought that they insinuated that is just a normal illness that can happen in small contained groups, much like meningitis in college students.

    I agree with this premise. My theory has been that the red eyed zombie is the carrier (whether or not the girls are involved). But, the pigs had to go, because one of the pigs was already dead from it and we've shared diseases like swine flu before.
