It was definitely spades. I just rewatched that scene a couple of minutes ago.

Yeah I don't get it either. There has to be some kind of symbolism there, right? But... it's just a playing card, lol.

I thought maybe because Jesus is gay, and it's a queen, that might be the connection, but that really feels like a reach.

A queen of spades as far as I know is a term for a white woman who...'enjoys the company' of black men.
The things you lean in the tattoo industry.

Also some people consider the term 'spade' to be an ethnic slur.

I, being a Motörhead fan - do not.

Not sure if there was any hidden meaning behind it.

Haha! What? Thank you for sharing that! I've never heard of that. We call them snowbunnies in Oklahoma.

I -wonder- if it is at all a very cheeky nod to the fact that Michonne slept with four other black guys and tried to seduce another in the comic - she certainly knew what she wanted.
I don't recall if she hooked up with a white guy, pretty sure she doesn't.
I'm probably just looking for connections now after reading this post but everything onscreen on TWD is usually deliberate.

    It might very well be.

That's what I'm saying. All of the paintings have had some meaning of some kind. Some even foreshadowed events to come. There has to be a hidden meaning.

Maybe it has something to so with Maggie and her taking over political leadership of the group, effectively making her "Queen of Alexandria" ??? I dunno.

She's holding all of the cards.
Hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs are all there - wait no, no diamond.

You're so right! 3 queens three suits.... Why not diamonds?

It's got me stumped - the three included symbols (which are depicted here as spears?) are all black - traditionally the heart is red and so is the diamond, but as far as I know the queen of diamonds holds no significant symbolic meaning.
I'm very interested now to see if this is an omen of some sort.

They also have the suit symbols in their crowns, which, I may be wrong, the heart looks red there.

Maybe the individual queens stand for characters in the show?

Queen of Spades: Carol, because she's become deadly.
Queen of Clubs: Maggie, because she's taking control and trying to tip the odds back in the groups favor.
Queen of Hearts: Michonne, because she's decided to love, and go with her heart.
Queen of Diamonds: No one, because there is no wealth to be had in TWD.

I'm probably reading too much into this, but I've always loved it when a scene focuses on a work of art, even minutely.
