He was a worried father perturbed about his missing daughter; he didn't have his wits about him.

I can see if a torniquet is applied immediately and the limb amputated right after the bite, but it doesn't take twenty seconds for major arteries to carry infected blood from limb to heart and back and all through one's body and maybe the bite didn't nick anything major and maybe the blood that's infected somehow managed to stay in the leg... But if he lives they caught it in just the nick of time and even then it's still major luck, may not have taken a half hour but they still wasted a lot of time getting to it.

Oh, I can see them *chopping it off* alright, I just can't see it working. Too much "dawn of the dead" maybe, but a big honking bite... I'd think you're done for. Also, Rick didn't even make a tourniquet, just put his belt around the leg. That wouldn't stop a big artery from pumping away. He should put his maglite suppressor in the belt and twist like crazy until the bleeding stops, then figure out what to do.

Yep, I buy this. He wasn't really doing what he normally would, he was trying to get to his daughter.

I tried to bite my brother's leg after the episode ended, as a joke, and then this got me thinking:
How the crack does a single bite tear the flesh and those weird intestines out of Hershel's ankle? o_O I know it is a minor detail but come on.

But anyway I have a little philosophy, in shows like these a character either gets wounded or killed. And since Hershy got bitten, there is a little chance he will be killed off or turned any time soon.

If you really want to bite a chunk out of someone it's not that hard. And that was ripped flesh hanging from Hershel's leg.

hmm I just never thought the human teeth was capable of such feat, even without feeling pain.

Yes. And human teeth can bite through a finger bone with out breaking.

Just watched the scene where the walker munched on Hershel's leg. Reminded me of Dale dying. Nice effects.

Also, the scene where Rick cuts off Hershel's leg. Creepy but awesome.

In the Talking dead of this episode it is said that during the 'gap' between season 2 and 3 the group decided if someone got bit in a place that can cut off, they will.

Hershel was kinda dumb, he just stepped really close to a walker on the ground. You would think you would walk far away from it, not right over top.

From our perspective, I agree, but they had been surviving for close to 10 months surrounded by walkers and dead bodies, getting desensitized. He thought it was a dead body. I imagine it would happen to me a few times too.
