I'm wracking my brain over who he saw but I think it was someone he knew. But who? Seeing Gabriel would bring a look of confusion not a smile. Did Eugene somehow escape the Saviors and find that group?

 

I don't think Rick recognized anyone. Could be wrong but I agree that the thought occurred to him that he had his soldiers and weapons whether the kingdom wanted to join him or not.

 

I think it was a new spin on the eyef*ck he figured he'd try to calm the situation down.

 

He smiled because he is trying to look at the positives with every situation in life. He had at least 50 people pointing guns at him. Now ordinarily that spells trouble.

But ol' Rick thought about it for a second and realized.... "I'd be worse off if I was still married to Lori". He couldn't help but crack a smile.

 

I took as a "look at this, a new group who knows how to defend themselves and fight. We can convince them to join us" type of smile.

Of course a midget might have also been tickling his ass.

 

I really hope he recognized someone (Heath? Anybody else we left behind?), because if he's that happy with all these guns pointed at him and his people, after everything that happened, that's just bad writing.

Did Tara mention to the group that Heath was missing? I didn't recall her saying this in "Swear". Unless it was assumed she told them off-screen. Just seems they aren't aware of him. I think the actor of Heath isn't going back till next season.

 

I don't think Tara mentioned Heath on screen. But by now of course everyone would know he's missing. If he's not back til next season, I doubt it would be him that Rick's smiling at. TWD throws out so many red herrings we can only guess.
