    ok let me explain

When walkers see someone and attack them and then a human kills one of them and some walker blood gets on them, they don't say "Oh sh!t, that is not a human, let's leave them alone"

When a walker approaches someone already covered in zombie blood and buts, they didn't smell the human scent in the first place.

It's all very plausible and perfectly obvious in the show

I think it's more "alive" smell than "human" scent. They kill and eat animals too.

I think it's just a matter of having to suspend disbelief. I think they needed a way for people to be close to walkers for some scenes and this is just what they came up with to facilitate it.

That being said, I must ask...Do you think zombies would breath at all? They can be decapitated and the head will still be animated, you can puncture a lung and they won't even slow down. So why should they breath at all? Another suspension of disbelief needed (for me anyway). I think the reason is that it a television show and is ultimately just entertainment and silent zombies would just be no fun.

Anyway, this is my 1st post here and I look forward to some good zombie discussion.

They don't always have zombies handy for this kind of thing. Should they make a "zombie wood pile" for easy access and storage? "Welp....time for a run, hey Carl go fetch me some zombie for choppin."

Rick and Glen were chased because it started to rain and wash the blood and guts/smell off of them.

well I'll tell you this...you wouldn't catch me arm to arm with walkers. she's one brave motherf***** and an excellent character. Cannot wait to get her backstory. Praying for some flashbacks to be honest!!

Which is really stupid. They were completely covered in guts and yet 2 mins in the rain makes them smell fresher than a woman who had a few guts spilled on her stomach?
Maybe the zombies back then had a more keen sense of smell.
Maybe they chased them because Glenn started to panic.
    Maybe it was bad writing.

Either way Michonne seemed way to relaxed standing amongst them all. How did she know one wouldn't get a wiff of fresh meat and decide to have a little nibble on her shoulder?

A zombies sense of smell would be even weaker than a human's is, so that makes the scent theory even more implausible.

I think some folks are thinking about this backwards...

Its not about what a human or Zombie having a strong sense of smell, or using their smell to find a target. its using their smell to eliminate a target.

I don't really think this is a deal breaker. Zombies don't seem to target each other yet they have very little differentiate humans from zombies, and they eat other animals.

So i think a Zombie targets based on some combination of Movement, Noise and a LACK of the death smell.

When Rick and Glen were covering their smell, they started Talking about the time when it started raining. so while they were losing their strong stench, they also started making more noise than a zombie would make, then they started moving faster, and i think the noise + faster movements was making them a target even though they had a bit of a death smell to them still.

Even though we (humans) have a very weak sense of smell, The smell of DEATH and WASTE is very powerful to us (we are sensitive to them)

Michonne being wounded was moving slow, she's super quiet, and she smells of death and decay.. seems to fit in with the rest of TWD "mythos"

Thats what i was thinking too. I think it just covers the "human" smell rather than trying to smell like the zombies.

Because Michonne was too concerned of her safety back in Woodbury she never took a shower, add that to 7 months of Ninja Sweating and you get a perfect Walker repellent.

In the wild, besides a few animals (such as vultures), they never eat animals that have been killed awhile ago, or carcasses. They don't ever bother to go sniff it, they already sense they are rotten(starting to rott) and know it's not good for them to eat it.

That's what happens when humans are looking and smelling like a dead. They are eliminated as a target.
Only walking as a zombie with some fake blood would not fool the dead; having rotten blood/guts on them but walking and talking normally would not work either.

I think the opposite.. death smell is way stronger than alive human smell..
It's easier to believe they spot rotten smell and eliminate it as a target, than they go sniffing around looking for fresh meat smell
