That reminds me, I was going to start a thread about this. My big question about that scene was WHEN did it occur? There was no snow, and things were quite green. My initial thought was they were jumping back a few weeks to a previous time, maybe the time right after the pikes. But Beta said "the time away has been good for the pack, and for you". What time away? And they made a point of showing Alpha holding a twig of nice green leaves in her hand. Was that a time jump? Were we seeing the following spring? And they spent some "time away" over the winter?

I think the whipping is a ritual thing to toughen them up, you know like when you train and you get punched in the guts repeatedly in the name of "conditioning" before a fight haha maybe we will see a flashback with Lydia getting the same thing done to her only she freaks out or calls it off or something

 

I guess the whipping was not a general regular 'training' but rather a specific training for an upcoming war. Of course, it is more of a psychological training than a physical training (ie to train for an increase tolerance of physical pain).
Maybe it is only her own ritual. Beta was not surprised by her asking and so this definitely was not the first time.
And, would Beta need this? I think not.
