Has GTA V PC's Social Club been Hacked? Rockstar Says No
A few people have had their GTA V accounts hijacked or stolen on the PC. And they’re pointing the finger at Rockstar.
What’s this about? Well, one of the main problems with online PC gaming, as opposed to console gaming, is that everything is a lot more hackable, as evidenced by the growing number of GTA V mod projects that have sprung up. And with that loose hackability comes a loss of security. MMOs like WoW have had issues with stolen and hijacked player accounts for years.
Rockstar, however, insists the game’s Social Club is safe. “The Rockstar Games Social Club has not been compromised,” the developer said in a public statement. “However, it appears that attempts have been made to access user accounts using email and password combinations from an unaffiliated, compromised website or database elsewhere on the Internet. For the accounts affected, we are in the process of reverting those accounts back to their original owners. As a reminder, it is a good policy to ensure that the Rockstar Games Social Club account username and password is not shared across multiple websites on the Internet.”
In other words, they believe the accounts have been stolen via other methods. For example, if you use the same username and password for secure sites that you do for throwaway sites you’ll only use once, the danger of making yourself vulnerable increases with each one. This could very well be the case because it’s the most common way of being “hacked.” Still, the egg will be on Rockstar’s face if they glance over the code one more time and find an exploit they hadn’t caught.
The moral is to never assume complete security with anything that involves the Internet, and always, ALWAYS make different passwords for every site you use.
