Feeling Earp-y About Wynonna Earp

by on 03/18/2016

Next month the SyFy network begins broadcasting something called Wynonna Earp. Listen to this description. If you claim you’re not even the least bit interested, you’re fooling yourself.

Based on the IDW comic, “Wynonna Earp” follows Wyatt Earp’s great granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she’s the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.

After years away, Wynonna Earp has traveled back to her home town of Purgatory to reluctantly take on the role destined for Wyatt Earp’s heir: demon protector. Her enemy: Revenants, the resurrected (and twisted) souls of the criminals Wyatt Earp once took down. Using only her wits and her wit, Wynonna, along with sister Waverly, associate Agent Dolls, and Wyatt’s cursed-with-immortality best friend Doc Holliday, must try to stop the Revenants from taking over the town – and escaping into the world.

The SyFy brand has been synonymous with garbage for so long that I can’t help but be wary, even when I hear of a concept I really like. This montage of clips isn’t bad either. You can almost smell the Xerox ink from the Buffy scripts they copied, but if you’re going to steal, steal from the best, right? That’s what Wyatt Earp would do.

If they can hit the right blend of Western, paranormal, horror and comedy, this could be a very enjoyable program. The only problem is that if it’s TOO good, SyFy will cancel it immediately.

Wynonna Earp premieres April 1st on SyFy. Come on, show, be good — I want to believe in you.
